Energy Modelling-Deep Energy Retrofits
Halifax, Nova Scotia
After owning the building for 10 years, the Ecology Action Centre (EAC) realised that a major expansion and renovation of the century-old building were in order to accommodate more than 40 employees. For the ambitious project on a limited budget, the EAC retained Equilibrium Engineering for their trusted knowledge and extensive experience in deep energy retrofits.
There was a strong focus on energy reduction before demand, passive systems over active, and simplicity. Extensive community consultation and over 1,400 hours of volunteer labour offered a very tangible approach to increase awareness, understanding and buy-in for green buildings practices and more sustainable redevelopment.
Energy modelling by Equilibrium Engineering demonstrated that reduced energy needs through improved insulation meant an appropriately sized, smaller heat pump could further reduce their annual energy costs.
The facility is uniquely positioned within the community to demonstrate energy and environmental leadership. The project resulted in the building becoming the 2nd most efficient office space in Canada!
