ASHRAE Level I & II Energy Assessments
Halifax, Nova Scotia

Equilibrium Engineering’s (EQ) mandate for the 2018 and 2019 ASHRAE energy assessments was to identify energy saving opportunities by taking a large campus-style approach to the fifteen sites. EQ’s assessments focused on the building envelopes, all major mechanical and electrical systems as well as current operational practices, and renewable energy opportunities.

Financial assessments were carried out for all of the recommended upgrades, including: increased insulation; improved air sealing; heat pumps; efficient lighting; low flow water fixtures; pipe insulation; window upgrades; improved temperature set points; cogeneration; upgrades to boilers and controls; variable speed pumps; solar photovoltaics (PV); and solar water heating.

Significant non-energy benefits included better occupant comfort, enhanced lighting levels, optimized temperature controls, and lower maintenance costs. Long-term benefits to Killam included improved energy security, reduced energy volatility risk, and increased portfolio resiliency.
